Houston - Senior Tara Watts scored a season-high 18 points and senior Shyrelle Horne dished out a game-high 8 assists to lead the Rice Owls women's basketball team to a 74-54 Conference USA win over UTEP inside Tudor Fieldhouse. It was the final home regular season game for Horne and Watts.
Three other Owls reached double-digits in scoring as well including Zoe Rogers (12), Morgan Mayse (10), and Opal Taskila, making her first collegiate start, tallied 10 points.
Rice (13-15, 7-8) jumped out to a terrific start as a Jessica Goswitz trey put the Owls up 10-1. Rice was able to extend its lead to 25-14 as Zoe Rogers scored two-point buckets on three straight possessions.
Rogers, by making her first three shots and combined with the 9-9 shooting on Thursday vs. Tulane, made 12 straight field goals spanning the two games before misfiring. She finished Saturday afternoon canning 6 of 10 shots and grabbing 7 rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
The Owls shot 47 percent in the first-half and finished the game at .476, its second-highest shooting percentage on the season. UTEP, meanwhile, struggled with 19 turnovers and shot just 38 percent from the field.
Rice had a season-high 25 assists. Besides Horne's 8, D'Frantz Smart and Goswitz each was credited with 7 assists as well.
Watts made a season-high 5 three-pointers and now has made a career season-best 46 three-point field goals. She is now in second-place all-time in Rice history with 144 three-pointers made and is three shy of tying Jessica Garcia's (1993-97) school record of 147.
UTEP (15-14, 6-9) was led in scoring by Baiba Eglite's 15 points and Brian Green added 13 points.
Rice concludes the regular season on Thursday, March 4 at Houston (7 p.m.).
