Rice University senior Rebekka Hänle defeated Arizona's Natasha Marks 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the first round of qualifying at the Riviera Women's All-American Tennis Championships on Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Hänle was in the first game of her second match Tuesday when weather postponed play.
"After Rebekka's match last year with Natsha, we knew that today was going to be a battle and it proved nothing less," said Rice coach Elizabeth Schmidt. "It was an extremely hard fought match from both players. Rebekka was aggressive and really stepped up under pressure. I am happy for her that she was able to pull this one out and now she needs to get ready for another tough opponent."
Hänle's match with South Florida's Irene Reberger, the No. 8 seeded player in qualifying, will resume at 10:45 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday.
