After closing out the fall season with his fourth-straight Top 10 finish, Rice University senior Michael Whitehead was named Conference USA's Golfer of the Week on Wednesday. It is the second time in as many weeks Whitehead has received the league honor and the third time in his career.
UTEP's Shang-Fan Huang was named C-USA's Women's Golfer of the Week.
Whitehead began the final round of the David Toms Intercollegiate tied for 23rd before firing a third-round 69 to finish in a tie for eighth at the LSU-hosted event. He started his final round with back-to-back birdies and also had an eagle on a par-five after the turn. With the finish, Whitehead topped four of the Top 100 collegiate golfers in the country as the tournament feature four of the Top 50 Division I programs.
Whitehead finished with a four-under, three-round score of 212 (69-74-69). With his second straight 212 scorecard, he lowered his season scoring average to 71.27 strokes per round.
Rice returns to competition next February. The Owls will begin the spring at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational Feb. 14-15 in San Antonio before playing host to the 11th Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon on Feb. 21-22.
