Rice University senior Oscar Podlewski won his first-round match in the "C" Singles Draw and teamed with Sam Garforth-Bles for an 8-3 win in the "B" Singles Draw as play began Friday at the 53rd Rice Fall Invite presented by Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites Medical Center Friday.

Podlewsi was one of four members of the Rice tennis team to advance to the semifinals in the singles draws. The second round of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the Rice campus.

Also winning first-round matches Friday was Harry Fowler, Philipp Seifert and Christian Saravia.

Podlewski will take on LSU's Oliver Borsos Saturday in the "C" Singles Draw. On the other side of the "C" bracket, Following a 6-4, 6-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's James Langford, Seifert will face Texas-Arlington's Erik Hjertonsson.

Fowler advanced in the "B" Singles draw semifinals with a 6-3, 6-3 win over LSU's Tom Knights. He will take on UTA's Yauheni Yakuleu on Saturday. Saravia defeated UTA's Brieuc Hamon 6-1, 6-1 and will play LSU's Cody Loup on Saturday.

All the semifinal matches are set for 12 p.m.

Rice will have four players competing in the consolation semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. Podlewski and Garforth-Bles were the only Rice doubles team to advance to the semifinals of their bracket. The Owls have three other doubles teams competing in the consolation semifinals. All doubles play begins Saturday at 9 a.m.
