Football: Four Share Inaugural Weatherly Captains Award

HOUSTON ? Seniors Jeremy Calahan, Terry Holley, Ed Bailey and Greg Wilson won inaugural Gerald C. Weatherly Captains Awards to highlight Rice's annual football banquet Friday night at the Marriott Medical Center Hotel.

The four will be the permanent captains of the 2004 Rice squad. The new award honors the memory of Weatherly, a captain of the Owls' 1949 Southwest Conference and Cotton Bowl champion who passed away on Dec. 28.

Calahan, a senior defensive lineman from Pflugerville (High) was one of the night's big winners, adding a Jess Neely Defense Award and a "Bloody Joe" Davis Award for rising above pain and injury. He shared the Neely defensive lineman award with junior end John Syptak (Bellville/High) and the Bloody Joe with senior offensive lineman Cotey-Joe Cswaykus (Midland/High).

Wilson (Houston/Westbury) added a George R. Brown Offense Award as the Owls' top offensive lineman, and Holley (Oklahoma City, Okla./Southeast) was tabbed winner of the Neely Defense award for defensive backs.

James W. Glanville Award (athletics, academics, integrity): Raymorris Barnes, DB (D'Iberville, Miss./High);
Joe Lipscomb Award (outstanding freshman): Joel Armstrong, QB (Longview/High);
Special Forces: Clifford Sparks, DB (South Grand Prairie/High);
Billy Ed Daniels Teammate Award: Scott Mayhew, OL (Nederland/High);
George R. Brown Offense Awards: Ryan Simonak, WR (Fort Worth/Nolan Catholic); Ed Bailey, RB (Spring/Klein);
Jess Neely Defense Awards: Adam Herrin, LB (Celina/High).

The winner of George Martin Award as the Owls' most valuable player will be announced as the Rice All-Sports Banquet in April.
